At the Britain Against Cancer conference, Andrew Lansley announced £150m to fund a UK based service intended to treat up to 1500 NHS cancer patients a year.

The Brain Tumour Consortium is a coalition of brain tumour organisations including The Joseph Foote Trust whos aim is to work together to campaign for improved brain tumour policy and services in the areas of support care and treatment; patient involvement and choice; and research.

Proton beam therapy is a safer form of radiotherapy that is able to target tumours in the brain and central nervous system more accurately, thus minimising damage to surrounding tissue, increasing success rates and reducing side-effects, such as deafness, loss of IQ and secondary cancers. The Department of Health notes that the therapy is particularly suitable for complex childhood cancers.

Currently only relatively high-priority patients can receive this treatment on the NHS and they have to travel to centres as far away as Switzerland and the United States.

The Department of Health is now considering where to locate the service; the three options are trusts in London, Manchester and Birmingham. In October 2010 the Government announced that three sites had been shortlisted so this progress is welcome.

Ian Gibson, Chair of the Brain Tumour Consortium Steering Group, said:

“This announcement is excellent news as the new service will improve quality of life for children and adults who would benefit from proton beam therapy, by reducing some of the side-effects of existing treatments and avoiding the need to travel abroad for state-of-the-art treatment.”

“Funding for this service has been earmarked for a long time so we are relieved that it has finally been confirmed and can now look forward to the development of the new centre. The Consortium looks forward to working with Government to ensure the service is delivered in a timely fashion and that patients’ needs are at the heart of the Department of Health’s decision-making process.”

Get to grips with campaigning says Brain Tumour Consortium

A new website is a one-stop hub for campaigners, patients and carers providing them with the tools to push for improved policy and services for people affected by brain tumours and to get brain tumours on the agenda in parliament.

The Brain Tumour Consortium, a coalition of brain tumour organisations including The Joseph Foote Trust, has launched the website to draw attention to its campaign to improve outcomes for brain tumour patients.

Andy Foote, Chair of Trustees at The Joseph Foote Trust says: “This new website is full of useful tools and information to help anyone who wants to campaign for better policy in relation to brain tumour care. Whether it is campaigning for better funding for research, consistent minimum standards of care or measures to promote early diagnosis, our supporters always want to help. The resources on this website will enable them to do so.”

The Birmingham based charity which has over 40 years experience in funding projects in the local community is committing £90,000 over three years to brain tumour research. When completed, the research will form a key role in the development of new targeted treatments and drugs that will increase survival time and reduce the deficits that many patients endure after treatment.
